Six jersey layout designs that work for real teams

Choose a visual direction that keeps the number clear, gives the team identity a job, and can survive the move from a flat screen to a real garment.

01 / The layout board

Six useful places to start

Every study uses Northline, number 24, and the same garment. Only the arrangement changes, so you can judge the layout instead of the mascot or palette.

Original Secondslide reference layouts. These are design directions, not production templates or proof of compliance. Confirm the current rules for your sport and governing body before artwork is approved.

02 / Review bench

Four checks before your team picks a layout

A strong full-size mockup can still fail when the player is moving, the jersey gets smaller, or the roster changes.

The distance check

If the number only works when the jersey fills the screen, it will struggle from a sideline or bleacher. NFHS volleyball guidance discusses officials distinguishing the libero and reading numbers under gym lighting. Use that as a practical test, not a substitute for your sport's rules.

The grayscale check

A red number on green can feel loud in color and nearly disappear in grayscale. Make the body of the number work first. Treat borders and shadows as trim.

The garment check

A flat rectangle hides problems. Baseball buttons interrupt a chest mark, football pads change the shoulder shape, and an NFHS volleyball libero top must remain easy to distinguish from team tops.

The roster check

The clean sample with 24 and MORGAN is not enough. Long names and wide digits expose placement systems that work only on the sample size.

03 / Type and color

Build readability before decoration

What fonts work best on jerseys?

Look for sturdy forms, open counters inside 0, 6, 8, and 9, clear differences between 1 and 7, and strokes that stay solid at the required size.

24Too thin for the main number

Use script for a team wordmark if it fits the identity. Keep it away from the main player number.

Color combinations worth testing

Start with a light and dark pair. Give the third color a smaller job, such as trim, a crest, or a panel.

Sport rules can change the layout

Pick the rulebook before approving the art. Number size, placement, contrast, home and away color, and allowed marks differ by sport.

A layout is a direction, not production art

The next version needs the actual sport and garment, governing rule set, approved logo files, color information, roster details, quantity, and target date. That is where a jersey idea meets the physical work of outfitting a team.

Secondslide provides team outfitting, equipment, bids, reorders, and human service. Our role in a design conversation is to help sort out decisions a flat inspiration image cannot answer.

06 / Common questions

Jersey layout questions

Should the team name or the number be bigger on the front?

The number should win when player identification matters most or the rulebook gives it a required size and position. A short wordmark can still be prominent, but it should not squeeze the number out of a clean field. Test the real team name and the widest number before deciding.

Should jersey numbers have an outline?

An outline can separate a number from the jersey, but it should not be the only reason the number is visible. Several NFHS sports require a solid, contrasting number body. Start with a body color that works on its own, then add permitted trim if it helps.

Can the same layout work for home and away jerseys?

Usually, if the layout is treated as a system instead of a simple color swap. Keep the same hierarchy, trim logic, and number family, then rebuild the contrast for each base color. Check whether the rules assign specific home, away, libero, or goalkeeper colors.

Where should a sponsor logo go on a team jersey?

There is no universal answer. Some rule sets restrict the marks allowed on a school uniform, and any patch can interfere with number visibility. Confirm that sponsorship is permitted, then place it after the team identity and required player information are resolved.

Can Secondslide copy a college or professional jersey?

Use other uniforms to name broad qualities you like, such as restrained piping, a shoulder yoke, or a crest-led front. Build an original layout for your own program and use marks you have permission to reproduce.

What should I send with a jersey layout reference?

Send the layout name or number, sport, team name, approved logo, colors, garment needs, approximate quantity, player names and numbers if available, target date, and the governing body or league.
