Softball Lineup Card: Free Printable Template for Game Day
A clean, standard-format softball lineup card you can print and hand to the umpire. Includes batting order, positions, jersey numbers, dedicated DP and Flex rows, and substitution tracking for fastpitch.
A softball lineup card is the official sheet you hand to the umpire before a fastpitch game. It lists your batting order, each player's name and jersey number, their defensive position, and your DP/Flex setup if you're using it. Once the umpire accepts it at the plate meeting, that batting order is locked in for the game.
This free printable softball lineup card covers a standard 9-batter order plus dedicated DP and Flex rows and a substitutes section. It follows the format umpires expect at every level, from 10U rec ball through high school varsity. Fill it in on screen or print a blank one and write it out by hand.

How to Fill Out the Lineup Card
Five minutes before the game and you're set.
Write in your starters (1-9)
List your nine starters in batting order. Write each player's full name (first and last), jersey number, and starting defensive position using standard abbreviations: P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, LF, CF, RF. Put your best on-base hitters near the top of the order.
Add your DP and Flex (if using the rule)
If you're running the DP/Flex, write the Designated Player in the blue row as your 10th batter and the Flex in the yellow row with their defensive position. The DP bats and the Flex fields. Not using the rule? Leave both rows blank and run a standard 9-batter lineup.
List your available substitutes
Fill in the substitutes section with bench players who may enter the game. Note their name, number, the position they can play, and which order spot they'd bat for. This helps the umpire verify substitutions quickly and keeps your re-entries legal.
Make two copies and present at the plate
Print the card and fill it out, then make a copy. Meet the umpire and opposing coach at home plate 5 to 10 minutes before game time, exchange cards, and review ground rules. Once the umpire accepts your card, the batting order is official. Keep your own copy in the dugout.
The DP/Flex Slot Explained
The one part of a softball lineup card that trips up coaches coming from baseball.
The DP/Flex is unique to softball, and it replaces baseball's designated hitter. It lets you bat 10 players while still fielding 9, so you can get your best bat and your best glove on the field at the same time even when they aren't the same player.
What each role does
- •DP (Designated Player): bats in the order but does not have to play defense. This is your offensive specialist. Write her in the blue DP row on the card.
- •Flex: plays defense but does not bat. The DP bats in the Flex's spot in the order. This is your defensive specialist. Write her in the yellow Flex row with her position.
- •The result: 10 players on the card, 9 in the field, and a deeper lineup than a straight 9-batter order.
The DP can step onto the field for the Flex, and the Flex can bat for herself, and starters can re-enter once. That flexibility is exactly why travel ball and high school teams use it. If your league or age group doesn't use the rule, just leave the DP and Flex rows blank. For the full breakdown with game scenarios, see our softball lineup template.
Fastpitch Lineup Rules in Plain Terms
The basics every coach should know before filling out the card.
How many players bat. A standard fastpitch lineup is 9 batters. With the DP/Flex rule it's 10. Many youth and rec leagues use a continuous batting order where everyone on the roster bats, which keeps every player involved and makes substitutions simpler. Confirm your league's format before game day.
Substitution basics. A substitute bats in the same order spot as the player she replaces. You can't move a sub to a different spot in the batting order. Record every change in the substitutes section so the umpire and scorekeeper can follow along without stopping the game.
Re-entry. Under most fastpitch rule sets (USA Softball, USSSA, NFHS high school), a starter who is subbed out may re-enter the game one time, but only in her original spot in the batting order. Substitutes who leave the game usually cannot re-enter. The card's "bats for #" column helps you track this.
Once it's official. After the umpire accepts your card at the plate meeting, the batting order is locked. You can still make legal substitutions during the game, but the order itself doesn't change. If you spot a mistake before the first pitch, most umpires will let you fix it, so double-check before you hand it over.
Tips for Softball Coaches
Get the most out of your lineup card.
Write clearly in block letters
The umpire reads your card all game. Print names in block letters, not cursive, so subs and batting-order questions don't slow things down. A card that's hard to read causes confusion at the worst moments.
Plan the lineup the night before
Use our softball lineup template to map out defense by inning and your pitching plan, then copy the starting order onto a clean card on game day. Planning ahead means the card becomes a quick reference, not a last-minute scramble.
Double-check jersey numbers
Umpires use jersey numbers to confirm the right player is batting. If a number on the card doesn't match the player's jersey, it creates problems. Confirm every number before you submit the card.
Note your slappers
Slap hitters change how the defense lines up, so know which of your batters slap. While the card itself stays simple, jot a small "S" by their name so you and your scorekeeper remember to call the shift when they're up.
Keep blank cards in your bag
Bring a stack of blank cards. Rain delays, late arrivals, or a lineup change before the plate meeting are a lot easier on a clean card than crossing things out. Run over your softball positions with younger players so everyone knows where they're playing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What goes on a softball lineup card?
A softball lineup card lists your batting order with each player's full name, jersey number, and defensive position. In fastpitch, it also includes the DP (Designated Player) and Flex if your team uses that rule, plus a section for substitutes. Most leagues have coaches hand two copies to the umpire at the plate meeting before the game so the batting order is official.
How does the DP/Flex work on a softball lineup card?
The DP/Flex rule lets you bat 10 players while fielding 9. On the card, the DP (Designated Player) bats in the order but does not have to play defense, and the Flex plays defense but does not bat. You write the DP and Flex in their own rows so the umpire can see the setup. If you are not using the rule, leave those rows blank and run a standard 9-batter lineup.
When do you turn in a softball lineup card?
Lineup cards are exchanged at the pre-game plate meeting, usually 5 to 10 minutes before the first pitch. Both coaches meet the umpire at home plate, present their cards, and review ground rules. Once the umpire accepts the card, your batting order is locked in and can only change through legal substitutions.
How many players bat in fastpitch softball?
A standard fastpitch lineup has 9 batters. If you use the DP/Flex rule, the lineup expands to 10 batters while you still field 9. Many youth and rec leagues use a continuous batting order where every player on the roster bats, which keeps everyone involved and simplifies substitutions. Check your league rules to confirm which format applies.
Can you change a softball lineup after turning in the card?
You cannot change the batting order once the umpire accepts the card, but you can make substitutions during the game. A substitute bats in the same order spot as the player they replace. Starters who get subbed out may re-enter once in their original spot under most rule sets. Record each substitution on the card so the umpire and scorekeeper stay on the same page.
