Softball Lineup Template: Free Printable Sheet with DP/Flex Support

A clean, printable softball lineup template that handles both standard 9-player lineups and the 10-player DP/Flex format. Built for fastpitch coaches at every level from 10U to varsity.

A softball lineup template is different from a baseball lineup in one key way: the DP/Flex rule. If your league allows it, you can bat 10 players instead of 9, with the Designated Player (DP) hitting for the Flex player who handles defense only. It sounds complicated, but once you see it on paper, it clicks fast.

This free printable template supports both standard 9-player lineups and the 10-player DP/Flex format. It includes batting order, player names and numbers, defensive positions, and substitution tracking. It's designed for fastpitch softball at the youth, travel, and high school level.

The DP/Flex Rule Explained

The biggest difference between a softball lineup and a baseball lineup.

The DP/Flex rule is unique to softball and trips up a lot of coaches, especially those coming from baseball. Here's how it works in plain terms.

The Basics

  • DP (Designated Player): Bats in the lineup. Does not have to play defense. Think of them as the offensive specialist.
  • Flex: Plays defense but does not bat. The DP bats in the Flex's spot in the order. Think of them as the defensive specialist.
  • Result: You bat 10 players, field 9 players, and get the best of both worlds.

Common DP/Flex Scenarios

  • DP hits, Flex plays defense: The standard setup. Your best hitter who isn't a strong fielder is the DP. Your best fielder who isn't a strong hitter is the Flex.
  • DP plays defense too: The DP can enter the field for the Flex (the Flex leaves). Now the DP both bats and plays defense.
  • Flex bats for themselves: The Flex can bat in their own spot (the DP leaves the batting lineup). Now you have a 9-player batting order.

The rule is optional. If you don't want to use it, just run a standard 9-player lineup. But for competitive travel ball and high school softball, the DP/Flex gives you more flexibility to optimize your lineup.

How to Use This Softball Lineup Template

Step-by-step for game day.

1

Set your batting order (1-9)

Write the 9 starters in batting order with names, numbers, and starting defensive positions. Put your best on-base hitters near the top.

2

Add DP and Flex if using the rule

Write the DP in the blue row. They bat 10th in the order. Write the Flex in the yellow row with their defensive position. The Flex doesn't bat. If you're not using the rule, leave these rows blank.

3

Plan defensive positions by inning

Fill in the inning columns with position abbreviations. This is where you track who plays where each inning, plan substitutions, and ensure equal playing time at the youth level.

4

Note slap hitters

Use the B column to mark left-handed hitters (L), right-handed (R), or switch (S). Slap hitters are typically left-handed and the defense needs to know to adjust their positioning.

When to Use This Template

Designed for fastpitch softball at every level.

Fastpitch games and tournaments. This is your game-day lineup sheet. Fill it out the night before, transfer the starting lineup to the official card for the umpire, and use this as your dugout reference for substitutions and defensive changes.

Travel ball with DP/Flex. Most travel ball organizations (ASA/USA, USSSA, PGF) allow the DP/Flex rule. Having a template with clearly marked DP and Flex rows prevents confusion and helps you explain the rule to parents who ask.

Youth softball with playing time rules. The inning-by-inning defensive alignment grid is essential for youth coaches who need to ensure every player gets minimum playing time. Plan it in advance, not mid-game.

Coaches transitioning from baseball. If you coach both baseball and softball, this template highlights the key differences. For the baseball version, use our baseball lineup template.

Tips for Softball Coaches

Lineup strategies specific to fastpitch softball.

Use DP/Flex to maximize your roster

The DP/Flex rule exists to get your best athletes on the field and at the plate. A strong hitter with limited range? Make her the DP. A great glove with a light bat? Perfect Flex. Don't overthink it.

Stack your slap hitters strategically

If you have multiple slap hitters, consider spreading them through the lineup rather than clustering them. This keeps the defense guessing about when to shift and prevents easy double plays on bunt attempts.

Plan your pitcher changes early

Softball pitchers throw every game in a tournament, unlike baseball. Plan your pitcher rotation across the full tournament, not just one game. Know your ace's limits and have your relief pitcher ready.

Review softball positions with young players

Younger players may not know all 9 positions or the abbreviations. Go over the lineup before the game so everyone knows where they're playing. It saves time and confusion when it's time to take the field.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the DP/Flex rule in softball?

The DP (Designated Player) and Flex rule allows a team to bat 10 players while only fielding 9. The DP bats in the lineup but does not have to play defense. The Flex plays defense but does not bat (the DP bats in their spot). Either the DP or Flex can play both offense and defense, but they must remain in their designated lineup spot. This rule replaced the old DH rule in most softball governing bodies.

How many players bat in a softball lineup?

In fastpitch softball, a standard lineup has 9 batters. If the team uses the DP/Flex rule, the lineup expands to 10 batters. Some youth leagues and rec leagues use a continuous batting order where every player on the roster bats. Check your league rules to confirm which format applies.

What is the difference between a softball lineup and a baseball lineup?

The main difference is the DP/Flex rule in softball, which replaces baseball's DH rule and works differently. Softball also has 10 fielding positions when using the DP/Flex system. The batting order format is the same (1-9 or 1-10), and substitution rules are similar. Softball lineups sometimes also note slap hitters for positioning purposes.

Can the DP and Flex player switch positions during a game?

Yes. The DP can play defense for the Flex (the Flex then leaves the game but can re-enter). The Flex can bat for themselves (the DP leaves the lineup but can re-enter). They can also both play simultaneously, with the DP playing a defensive position and the Flex in another. The key rule is that the DP must always remain in the same batting order spot.

What positions do softball players play?

Softball has 9 defensive positions: pitcher (P), catcher (C), first base (1B), second base (2B), shortstop (SS), third base (3B), left field (LF), center field (CF), and right field (RF). With the DP/Flex rule, the Flex typically plays one of these positions while the DP bats without fielding. For a full breakdown, see our softball positions guide.
